It was therefore a privilege to organize a large national wine test together with, and even at Meron, that was published in a whole series of regional newspapers. Harry van den Dungen personally tasted along, because his general knowledge of wine is also great; for years he was the much-praised wine buyer for HEMA.

I still remember the first time I met Harry and Mark: their passion, enthusiasm and entrepreneurial spirit immediately stood out. It is rare to encounter such drive. The measurement methods we developed together are truly special. They combine the flexibility of advanced GC/MS technology with the unique world of wine analysis.

In 1996, as a Wine Buyer at HEMA, I connected with Meron through Harry, my predecessor. Collaboration was an obvious choice, as we faced quality issues impacting stores and customers. Partnering with Meron allowed me to enforce stricter quality controls with our producers, which initially caused resistance. Supported by HEMA’s management, we persisted.

Later, at Verbunt Wijnkopers, I continued this partnership, which remains strong today. Meron has grown significantly, adapting to the evolving wine industry. As chairman of the KVNW, I’ve strongly recommended Meron, now an associate member, for its positive impact on wine quality.

Thanks to our many years of collaboration with Meron, we are able to optimally maintain our quality process. Through both periodic measurements and random samples, we can guarantee our customers that our wines meet the quality requirements, and beyond. As a producer, the objective is not only that the wines go to the customer with a high quality standard, but also that continuity on the shelf is guaranteed.

In 2007, I visited Meron and was struck by their innovative setup. At the time, they were using a Skalar SAN++ Wine Analysis CFA Analyzer from the early 2000s. A few years later, when Meron moved to a new location, we’ve had the privilege of enhancing this system with upgraded components and software to meet the latest standards. Working with Meron has been a true pleasure, and we’re proud that our equipment has contributed to their precise, consistent analysis, supporting Meron’s deep expertise in wine composition and quality. My parents were among the first Amsterdammers to move to Almere. After many happy years, they returned to Amsterdam, lovingly welcomed back. As a chauvinistic Amsterdammer, I thought I’d never return to Almere—but I miscalculated Meron. Now, here I am, heading to the Almeerse Kweekgrasstraat! And I am not doing that to listen to the vision of Harry van den Dungen and his team on lawns, football fields or roadsides, but to discuss their results of vines and the associated winemakers. Where I (with my tasting team from De Grote Hamersma) trust organoleptic findings during the tasting of thousands of wines per year, Meron leaves nothing to such chance. ‘Fine of course’, they think, ‘such a clever vocabulary, we like to compare it with razor-sharp analyses in our laboratory using state-of-the-art technology.’ Then I come to the conclusion that there is no such thing as good wine and good wine. A wine that has also been tested by Meron leaves you wanting more.

I had the pleasure of exploring the groundbreaking research conducted by the Meron Wine Institute. Meron’s proprietary know-how and expertise, provideds a deep understanding into how different soil compositions and climate conditions, and not limited to can influence the taste of wine, offering insights that I hadn’t encountered before. This research and its robust Data Reference Library built over a 30 year time span is key ensuring and guiding their global retail customers transparently to be able to consistently offer Quality Wines to consumers on and drive repeat purchases

For several years now, I’ve been part of the Meron tasting team as a guest taster. During these sessions, we assess hundreds of wines alongside the client and discuss them openly. Within the four walls of the tasting room, these conversations are very candid. Meron’s clients, permanent staff, and guest tasters like myself freely share questions and opinions, each drawing on their own expertise. This leads to fascinating and insightful discussions, not only about the wines on the table but also about trends in the wine industry and general consumer behavior. Incredibly valuable.
